Moving Mountains. A Message From Our Executive Director
It is truly an honor to lead an organization that re-shapes lives and betters our community each and every day. Just last year we provided more than 31,000 of our families, friends and neighbors in LaPorte County with better quality of life through United Way programs and services. Through the generosity of literally thousands of caring individuals, businesses and organizations, we also had one of our highest annual fundraising campaigns, with over $1.1 Million pledged.
Even with our successes, this year has proven to be one of the most difficult and challenging times our community has ever faced. The rate of unemployment has hovered at nearly 12% for some time now – more than double that from only a year ago. More and more families and individuals are requesting basic human services for the first time in their lives. The cupboards of many area food panties are nearly bare. Services that support basic human needs are bursting at the seams.
As we enter into our 2009 campaign season, let me challenge you with this thought. More than ever before we have a unique opportunity to make a huge impact at a time when we need it most. Former La Porte Mayor Leigh Morris once told an audience of community and business leaders, “United Way is one of the most precious community assets we have. It is up to nurture it and support it, so it in turn can nurture and support us.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Let me encourage you to please be as generous as you can when you make your gift to the United Way Community Fund. I’m counting on you – our community is counting on you!
Most Sincerely,
Bill Hanna
Executive Director
